Lost Jockey / Tonje Li

€55.00

Lost Jockey is a tribute to how getting lost can lead to new discoveries. The book consists of photographs of objects and fragments of nature, connected through poetic associations and playful contrasts. Occasionally, collages appear—made from images that were once rejected or misplaced in the artist’s own archive—where fragments are re-examined and given a new chance in different constellations. Together, they form a composition rather than a narrative, with moods that shift between the alluring, the repulsive, and the mysterious. The title of the book is inspired by René Magritte’s first surrealist painting The Lost Jockey, in which he claimed to have found a new direction in his work through the act of getting lost. In the same spirit as the surrealists—who sought to renew our perception of the world and appeal to the imagination—the book arises from a desire to offer a universe where logic does not stand in the way of discovery. Through the artist’s own experience of being “lost” and directionless, came the realization that an accepting gaze can lead to new ways of seeing the world while also fostering a sense of connection to one’s surroundings. Lost Jockey consists of two books in one and is designed to invite the reader to get lost and make their own discoveries and combinations or simply see it as a place of refuge—if you find yourself lost.
