  • (b. 1986, Germany) explores the relationship between textiles and porcelain through sculptural works that evoke a universal sense of corporeality beyond the human body. In her practice, porcelain suggests bones and joints, while textiles function like skin, giving the sculptures a bodily presence that appears to move, expand, and contract. Her research focuses on how far these forms can be manipulated while still allowing viewers to form associations.

    Daniela is based in Bergen and completed her MA in Fine Art at UiB’s Faculty of Art, Music and Design in 2020. She has participated in numerous national and international group exhibitions, and her works are held in the collections of the National Museum in Oslo, KODE Bergen, Nordenfjeldske Kunstindustrimuseum in Trondheim, the Equinor Art Collection, and the City of Gothenburg.

  • is a ceramic-based artist. She holds a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (2009–13) and an MFA from the Oslo National Academy of the Arts (2021–23), where she was awarded the NK Student Prize in Oslo 2023. Her artistic techniques and practice are grounded in a personal philosophy of seeking originality and materiality in everyday life, especially through clay—an element naturally given by the earth.

    Park has been awarded the National 3-year Working Grant for Young Artists, as well as the Talente Preis 2024 – Meister der Zukunft from HWK für München und Oberbayern (Munich, Germany). Her works are held in the collections of Nasjonalmuseet, KODE Bergen, UD (Ministry of Foreign Affairs), Oslo Kommune, and the Nordenfjeldske Kunstindustrimuseum (National Museum of Decorative Arts, Trondheim).

  • is a Japanese-Brazilian artist living and working in Bergen. They work with materials including textiles, silk-screen prints, printing, jewellery and performance. Their materials are often recycled, or large, colourful sheets of silk and cotton. These works often ask critical and challenging questions about societal structures, at both the social and political level.

    Yamamoto has an MA in Art from the Kunsthøgskolen in Bergen (2013) and has studied at London College of Fashion and Escala de Belas Arts in Rio de Janeiro. They have exhibited at various national and international venues, and created artworks for several public buildings. In 2025 they had a solo exhibition at Munch Museum, Oslo. At same time they is working on two commissions for the Oslo Courthouse and the Cissi Klein School in Trondheim.

  • (b. 1950, Bergen) is a Norwegian ceramicist and visual artist based in Bergen. For decades, she has developed a distinctive practice in ceramics, sculpture, and installation, using stoneware and porcelain to explore time, material, and transformation.

    Her organic, layered forms retain traces of their making—cracks, textures, and accumulated surfaces—moving between the raw and the refined. In her Still Life series, organic materials are transformed into porcelain objects, like fossils or frozen moments.

    Aasen’s work is held in collections including the National Museum of Norway and KODE Art Museums. She has received numerous honours, including the Norwegian Association for Arts and Crafts’ Honour Award.

In ancient Chinese philosophy, hard and soft, strength and weakness, are not fixed opposites locked in perpetual conflict. Rather, they are complementary aspects of a larger whole, constantly transforming into one another.

Ceramic and textile are two materials widely explored in contemporary art and craft. Through their physical properties, they are often associated with the hard and the soft respectively. Yet artists working with these materials frequently seek to move beyond such conventional distinctions, exploring qualities and sensations that challenge our expectations.

For this exhibition at the community-oriented art fair SWAB Barcelona, Northing has brought together Lydia SooJin Park, Daniella Bergschneider, Kiyoshi Yamamoto, and Kari Aasen, whose practices engage with one or both of these materials. Through sculpture, installation, and material experimentation, the artists either subvert the inherent properties traditionally associated with ceramic and textile or bring them into dialogue, creating new forms of balance and harmony.
