SARAH JOST / GRÅ
In her artistic practice Sarah Jost mainly work with installation and sculpture, with elements of text and drawing. Methodically she re-use fragments of older works and found material in combination with new ones. She has a MFA from Bergen Academy of Art and Design (2009).
During her stay at the factories in Hangzhou and Sui Chang Sarah focused on observing, absorbing and collecting ideas and impressions for one or more works that will be realised in her studio in Bergen. Since it was both her first time in China and at a paper factory the impressions where many and the time short.
Amongst many possibilities one fascinating aspect was all the leftover materials from the paper and print production like fibre from cleaning the water after the paper production and cut off strips of paper.
One idea that Sarah will develop is a sequel to her artists book grå (grey) that was shown at exhibitions during the stay in China. Grå (grey) is based on travels by bus and train through the Scandinavian landscape. Hangzhou grey will be based on the different grey papers in Paper Lives production and Josts experiences from the residency.
Sarah collected images of the wooden stools that the workers in the factory used. Most of the stools being modified and strengthened to fit the user in a manner that reminded the artist about the construction of recent work of hers. She also collected images of trees, most of which had different support structures that visually resembled the way the stools had been modified.
