IMPERFECT GRAVITY

  • (b.1994, Norway) and Haruka Fukao (b.1993, Japan) work within a variety of mediums. Devik works mainly with drawing, painting, and independent book making, while Fukao works between film, performance, and embroidery. They started collaborating whilst studying the Fine Art undergraduate course at Falmouth University. For their final show they made an imaginary world for their alter-egos Po and Zum including costumes, performances, video installations, paintings, and sculptures in textile. Following their graduation both artists went on to pursue an MA at the Faculty of Fine Arts at the University of Bergen. Since then their collaboration has been more or less inactive, until now.

    After graduating Devik has held exhibitions at Nonneseter Kapell: Bergen (NO), Nye Bokboden: Bergen (NO), Kunstgarasjen: Bergen (NO), and Test Space, Spike Island: Bristol(UK), and been part of group exhibitions at Tegnerforbundet: Oslo, Standard (Oslo):Oslo (NO), Bergen Kunsthall: Bergen (NO), and PADA studios: Barreiro (PT).

  • (born 1993) completed an MA in visual anthropology at Tromsø University. The films she made during her studies have been shown at several ethnographic film festivals internationally. Apart from her studies and work as a Japanese tutor, Fukao has also done artistic research for the artist collective Keiken.

Imperfect Gravity is an exhibition crystallised from a long-standing friendship dating back to the artists’ college days in the UK, between Norwegian artist Unn Devik and Japanese artist Fukao Haruka.

Departing from, and taking advantage of, their different cultural backgrounds, artistic skills, mediums, and, not least, languages, they have immersed themselves in each other’s cultures. From this starting point they have created a participative and interactive exhibition centred around a card game dubbed Imperfect Gravity. Motifs found within the game are then again materialised in different forms throughout the exhibition.

The exhibition is also, in a nutshell, a demonstration of how geographically distant cultures influence and enrich each other through a long history of exchange and mutual development.
